7 Days In Mostar And Visoko Bosnia…
After my 4 days in Montenegro – with a longer than expected stopover in Tivat – Finally I was here in Bosnia (actually Herzegovina) arriving in Mostar at 3:30AM in the morning.
I didn’t write about this in my Montenegro blog but I arrived in Tivat at 2PM ready for the 3pm coach to move on to Mostar. I’d just assumed I’d be able to get this bus with no issue but no – frustratingly even though I was here on time I couldn’t get this bus and there wasn’t another one until 22:30pm that night.
Certainly, it was a huge headache for me to have because nowhere here was affordable enough for me to book in the area (Tivat) and my only options were to wait till the next day – booking an expensive hotel to stay here, or sleeping rough, or to just to arrive in Mostar in the early hours of the morning with a late night bus (which I did).
I decided on the latter. Fortunately, I had been in contact with my host Adi at the hostel and he was very happy to let me in during the early hours of the morning.
It was my salvation really – Tivat was nice to get to see a bit more of but I really could have done with getting the earlier bus for the trouble it would have saved me. I mean I suppose it was a good day out here. The marina is very beautiful and I really liked the ferry crossing at night to get over to Kotor Bay.
I think maybe though it would be nice to come here under better circumstances. Somewhere to stay the night etc.

My First Day In Mostar and Herzegovina
It was nice to wake up in a bed, as opposed to wandering the streets waiting for the next day.
Being told how to get into the hostel late at night was very helpful. It still was quite rubbish missing my first night here but this I made peace with.
I wasnt too tired surprisingly, after waking up at 9:30 the next day I headed out the door around 12:00pm midday and I was amazed just to look at the river from over the bridge at my hostel.
It was so beautiful. I was definitely in awe of just seeing this. So, natural and nothing like anywhere near where I live in England. At this moment just looking at this I was ready to scream from the roof tops about just how great it is in Mostar – although, maybe I spoke to soon because shortly after there was something I found out about here that I really did not like.
This is that on Sundays most places are closed. I wanted a cold drink and to find somewhere to have breakfast. It was so annoying there was a sign on the side of a pop up stall that said “Wanta Fanta” – I could see the cold cans of Fanta locked in the fridge but no one was about to sell me one. It was proper tormenting.
So, I ended up in a Pub called Shankleys named after the Liverpool football legend Bill. I didn’t want to drink alcohol before I got here (hence my unquenchable thirst for a cold Fanta) but I gave in – it seemed like the only place I could find open, and I reluctantly ordered a beer. Very naughty but it was actually very cheap on the plus side. Just 2.5 Euro (5 BAM) for a Pint.
I drunk I don’t know how many beers after this and on an empty stomach. They told me the kitchen was closed but good job for me they eventually started serving food and I got a Jurgen Klopp burger.
I don’t really remember to much after this apart from meeting Adi the hostel owner and paying him for my Initial 2 day stay here – and for the hostel tour the next day. Just that I had to be up early and I had a big day ahead of me.

Best Tours In Mostar
Visiting Tekija, Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravice
I was so glad I booked this tour. For sure, I could have saved myself money booking on Viator or GetYourGuide but I decided I would go on Adi’s Hostel tour because of what he did for me on my first night by letting me turn up in the early hours of the morning.
It would have saved me maybe £14 booking another tour online but actually, come to think about it, 50 Euros I think this cost me – it was well worth it 100%. If anyone comes to Mostar I’d definitely recommend to come stay here if it is available.
It was the best day out I thought. Lot’s of fun and all 3 main stops were Incredible. The Montenegro tour I did was good as well but this easily was just as good and amazing.
Our First Main Stop of the Day – Tekija Blagaj
This place Tekija Blagaj was very Interesting. Really, I would have liked to stay here longer. This is the location of the historic Sufi monastery (tekke) built into the cliff – overlooking the Buna river. Maybe this is a place to spend half a day at.
Seeing the boats going into the cave was something that looked really cool I thought and I was a bit upset I didn’t have a bit more time to do this here.
We were told on the drive here about this cave and its explorations / expeditions. Quite a fascinating place – as Adi told us this cave system Vrelo Bune still remains never fully explored and whatever is here beyond siphon length: ~520 m to this today is still yet to be uncovered.
The Next Stop – The Blagaj River Bridge
I almost forgot about this. This was only a short stop after Tekija – Blagaj – The source of the Bhuna River. This I runs separate from the other River in Tekija I think Adi said. Another very beautiful place. It was quite Interesting to see, and very clean water.
It is supposed to be very good for fishing here. I think you can get wild Salmon and another fish that is very popular to eat in Bosnia from this river.
Visiting Počitelj Village
We next visited the village of Počitelj. Famous for its Mosque and the Sahut Kula clock tower. This was a cool place. Lots of traders selling fresh Pomegranate juice and you can walk up to the old ruins for amazing views of the landscape below.
We spent around 30-45 minutes at this stop. It was lot’s of walking but well worth it for getting to see the view of everything from climbing up here.
My First Visit To Kravice (Kravica)
This was such an amazing place. Especially to get in the water and have a swim round in. Really I didn’t want to get out. It’s not just beautiful here but the water is so clean and refreshing. I’ve never been to a place like this in my life and it was definitely the best part about this whole tour.
I felt like while in Montenegro I had enough opportunities to swim but just kept making excuses not to have a proper dip in the water. I kind of regretted this – being so boring but here I definitely wanted to make up for it.
It was time for our dinner maybe about 45 minutes after my swim and I thought this would be it for the day but actually the best part was we got another 30 minutes swim after dinner as well.
Although, the not so funny part came after getting back on the bus. It was at this point I realised I had left my reebok trainers behind underneath the table where we had dinner.
I didn’t even think whilst walking to the bus in my sliders. All I was thinking about was if I would be able to find the bus or not – I made sure to keep the girls I recognized in my sight and I suppose I was in a bit of a rush. I didn’t even think about what footwear I had on.
Other than this it was a fun trip back. The girls I was travelling with had me playing this game with them. Making up scenarios and trying our best to describe them with 1 being the best and 10 being the worst.
I wasn’t very good at it but still it was a good laugh. We all ended up getting drunk together after this, and it was a good end to the day.
Also, about my missing trainers – I booked another tour for Kravice for the next day –
Basically, hoping they would still be here under the table. It was a long shot but all I could think was how funny this would be if I came back here and I found them.
Going Back to Kravica (Day 2)
Really, I think I would have rather gone back to Tekija on this day. Even going to Visoko a day earlier would have also not been a bad shout but losing my trainers, as much as they did need replacing – I really could have done with these Instead of my sliders.
For all the walking I had to do these were just a nightmare. Getting them in Turkey was a funny enough story – the trouble it would have saved me buying these before I did but now they was just hurting my feet lol.
I was actually thinking this would be funny to come back here and get them, and to then go for an even longer swim, but I think this was always a long shot.
I paid £27 for the tour on GetYourGuide. I should have really asked Adi at the hostel to phone the place to get them to put my trainers aside for me but I supposed in the end I just thought I’d try my luck and hope they hadn’t ended up in the bin.
I choose the 12:30pm slot for my tour -much less stressful than having to leave at 8 or 9:30AM when I had been drinking so much.
I was literally so hungover this would have been hell. In fact, the next day I just wanted to drink more and the 2 beers I had at Shankely’s pub before the tour went down very nicely.
I headed to the meeting place after this and it was not to much trouble really – my tour guide was very responsive and made sure I knew where to wait for him.
I was a bit worried about turning up half drunk and hungover on the day. I’ve had tours like this where they have just told me they’re not taking me but it was fine really.
I really liked the tour guide he was very enthusiastic about his job – telling us stories on the way here. He said he was finishing authoring a book about the Yugoslavian war in the 1990s. I’d love to read it but we’ll see if I’m ever able to find it when its out.
So, It was quite a different experience going back to Kravice again.
I went off on my own since I was already familiar with the place. Sadly, kind of as expected, my trainers were nowhere to be found. I think with so many people coming here something like this would just get thrown in the bin but still, I made the best of a bad situation.
I had a few beers, bought myself dinner and of course went for a nice long swim.
The tour had one stop after this – back to Počitelj. I done my own thing here (again). There was no hike up to the ruins, as it was too late in the day. It was more of a toilet stop than anything else although the guide did say if we had come here earlier we would have stayed for longer.
My Last Night At Hostel Adi
Actually, I wasn’t meant to stay here with Adi again on this last night I had in Mostar. In fact, I’d booked another place and I only came here for my bags and my laundry.
I hung about just to have a few beers and to say goodbye to the girls I met here. It was a lot quieter than the night before but it was just nice to relax. I had a 30 minute walk to my other place and in the end I just kept putting it off ordering one beer after another.
I told Adi I had another hostel but he let me know that 2 guests had cancelled and asked me if I wanted to stay again. It was 25 or 30 euros for a room – basically, double what I was supposed to pay to stay at the other place but Adi said I could have a free beer and for all the trouble I would have had walking to the other place 30 minutes away I just thought why not?
Although, only thing – I had to get some cash out.
A great tip Adi give me is if you are here use the Nova Bank ATM in the mall because if you have a travel card (mine is Caxton.io. – Revolut and Wise are others you can use) this will save you around 7 euros every transaction on standard ATM fees.
Entering Liminal Space
How I end up in these places is beyond me. I couldn’t find the main entrance to the Mall and ended up going in through the back way with the stairs and elevators.
I made a 10 minute video of getting lost here. It was total hell but quite funny I thought – I could not find my way into the actual mall and I went up every floor trying to find a way in.
Eventually, someone opened a door and I got in to the mall but I was being a right idiot about it. I’m sure there must have been a main entrance somewhere so god knows why I had to do this.
Back at the hostel I carried on drinking till maybe 1:30AM. I should have gone to bed earlier and set my alarm. It was very stupid – I needed to be up to get the train to Sarajevo that left at 6.33AM. I couldn’t believe it on the morning. It was just typical – I never set an alarm and I woke up at 6:10AM – only 23 minutes before I had to catch my train.
Lucky for me the train station wasn’t too far. Actually it was a good job I stayed at Adi’s hostel and not the other place – as here I was only 5-10 minutes away but still I was very surprised I actually got here in time.
The Trip To Sarajevo
I was quite worried catching the train because I was so late I had to head straight to the platform without buying a train ticket. It wasn’t that I just wanted to save money on one – the queue was so long I’m sure it was either a case of buy a ticket or miss my train.
I know this was risky. The last time I did this in Rome Italy – the ticket inspector forced me to pay a 50 euro on the spot fine. I was worried this might happen again but in this case the inspector was so much nicer and friendlier – I asked to buy a ticket and he just said no problem – it was such a relief.
It was one of the small things I really liked about Bosnia – very nice people unlike some of the Italians I’ve met on my travels lol
Waiting For My Bus To Visoko Bosnia
I spent the morning after arriving in Sarajevo drinking at the old pub bar near the train station. The bar tender was really cool – also called Alexander like myself.
I thought he would not like me coming in at 9:30 AM ordering one beer after another. I would have liked food but nothing was really on offer here apart from Coffee, soft drinks and alcohol. So, I had a good few hours till I had to catch my bus. I didn’t want to go too far away so this place was very convenient for me.
The not so funny part was after I left here. I definitely give myself enough time to get back to the train station to get my bus ticket for Visoko. The bus stop was just 2 minutes away but still I ended up waiting at the wrong place – at a bus stop outside the bus terminal.
I think it was 15 or 20 euros I paid for my bus ticket, and I was told more than once where I had to go but still I didn’t pay attention and by the time I worked out where to go it was too late.
Fortunately for me there was another bus leaving only an hour later. I think this a local bus that passed Visoko on the way, but still, 20 euros basically wasted. I seriously wonder if I hadn’t got drunk if this would have happened. I never know with me lol
I then wasn’t sure where I’d have to get off the bus. I was quite tired really, and sure I must have had a good snore at some point during the bus journey here. The driver told me off for putting me feet up on the seat. I basically, just made myself comfortable and went to sleep but good on him when the bus got to Visoko he made sure he let me know.
Arriving in Visoko and Getting to the Nihad B&B
To get to my B&B this was a long walk from the bus station. Typical me booking somewhere that isn’t anywhere near to where I actually wanted to be.
I quite liked the place. It was cool seeing the different sized lizards here but still the 1 hour plus walk from the bus station to get here – and after that the same distance to get to the town and all the main attractions here – it was a lot of hassle. Especially, having to walk in my sliders.
Where the Nihad B&B is – It’s a nice location really and for bed and breakfast 15 euros was an absolute steal. I couldn’t actually believe getting my breakfast the next morning. I didn’t come out to get it to 9AM after everyone else had their typical continental buffet and the lady here just kept putting food in front of me.
It was very nice and I was very full after but lesson learned I really should have come down earlier. Breakfast here is from 7AM to 8:30AM
I felt proper spoilt on this 1st morning.
Very happy with the service but of course I had a long way after this to get to town and to visit the famous Bosnian Pyramids.

Visiting The Pyramid of the Sun 4 Years Later
September 2022 was my last time here visiting the Sun Pyramid. Actually, I didn’t come straight here – I got waylaid in a pub along the way (The Karo Moto Pub). I definitely spent a bit too long in here but still I left here and got to the Sun Pyramid with enough time to see everything I could.
Since my last trip one noticeable difference is they have built a new set of stairs at the bottom. That was good to see – definitely some improvements made but still I will say you have to be very careful making your way up here.
The higher you get up the less stairs you have and in some places its really quite slippy.
I would guess this will be made more accessible in the future. I didn’t go all the way up but honestly – It was far too dangerous in my opinion. One fall up here and if you land on your head or anything I really wouldn’t like to think about it.
Very Interesting though of course. Many signs you can read along the way about the sacred geometry connecting the Pyramids here, their alignment with each other and the energy field this place is generating.
I had a good chat about the Pyramids at the pub before making my way up here. The bar man said he thinks people are 50/50 whether they believe these are really Pyramids or not. I get why but I find it very believable that they are.
Just there alignment with each other I think has to be more than coincedence.
Note: a book I’d recommend reading is The Atlantis Blueprint by Colin Wilson and Rand Flem-Ath. It doesn’t say about Bosnia (this book was published before the discovery in 2005) but it explains the phenomena of ley lines and sacred geometry which is certainly very relevant.
Visiting The Moon Pyramid and the Ravne Tunnel Complex
I didn’t come to either the Moon Pyramid or the Ravne Tunnels the whole time I stayed in Visoko. I’d planned to but just never made the time. I partly blame booking so far away but also getting drunk at the pub so much was maybe the real reason.
Anyhow, If you come to Visoko the only 3 unexcavated sites to visit are the Sun Pyramid, the Moon Pyramid, and the Ravne tunnels.
You can hike to the Dragon, Love and Mother Earth (Temple) Pyramids but they are not tourist spots really – who knows what will happen with these in future but basically they are just hills.
Also, besides these places you have the Magic Forest next to the Ravne Tunnels. I didn’t know about this on this trip or even before when I came in 2022. It looks to me that this with the tunnels is something you want to give a whole day for.
It’s a very new age, mystical, spiritual vibe here. Not everyone’s cup of tea but the tunnels at least are worth a visit in my opinion. Even they say if you have any health problems spending some time down in the tunnels is said to have some kind of healing power.

Staying In Visoko Bosnia
The actual town of Visoko is quite nice to stay in even without the Pyramids. The rivers here aren’t as nice as the south (Herzegovina) but still of course being by a river for me is always nice even if they do look a bit dirty.
The town I wonder if It has had a lot of work done to it since the discovery of the Pyramids and its new found fame as a tourist destination. It really is quite a beautiful place to visit with plenty of restaurants and cafes lining up the streets.
Just Sunday is maybe the day you might not like so much here as many places are closed because of the trading laws in Bosnia.
What Else I Got Up To
My 2nd full day in Visoko was a bit naughty. My plan was to go to the Ravne tunnels but I spent the whole day almost just getting drunk in the Karo Moto Pub. It was a good day with good company mind but I did have a feeling I was wasting my time here a bit and was quite disappointed that I didn’t get to visit the tunnels.
Getting Lost After the Pub
I really couldn’t believe this. The walk home was a total disaster. I was video calling my sister and niece – and even using Google Maps I still got myself lost. It turned out that because I didn’t cross the bridge I was supposed to I ended up on the highway going over the road my BnB was.
It was ridiculous I was 10 minutes away according to Google maps but to get the road below – I would have had to drop down a big hill (not safe because of risk of unexploded mines), and got from one side of the river to the other (no way was that happening,
Also, I probably sound like I’m talking absolute nonsense here but I’m sure I could hear Wolves howling in the distance. They do live in Visoko and actually they are a protected species meaning no one here is allowed to hunt them.
It was actually bonkers I had to walk all the way back into town to cross the bridge and Instead of the 1 hour and 20 minutes it should have took me the journey took 3 1/2 hours. I got back at 3AM in the morning instead of 12. Definitely not something I’ll do again in a hurry.
Hiking to the Dragon Pyramid, River Swimming and The Karo Moto Festival
The day before I spent drinking at the Karo Moto Pub I was talking to the bar man here about swimming spots. I asked him if he knew anywhere and he showed me a place near his home village Zbiije by the Dragon Pyramid.
I had Initially planned to leave with the bar man at 3pm on the day. He had to make other plans – quite annoyingly but still, I drunk up and left the bar at 5pm and made my way here to this place.
It was Incredible – even just walking here. The first thing I noticed was the biker sign, and then I started seeing 100’s of motorbikes going past me. There is a biker camp up this way (I think open all year round) – I thought it was to do with this but then I started hearing the music.
What the bar man never told me was about the Biker rock festival happening here. I couldn’t believe it. I thought this would just be a quiet country walk but here it was all going on.
Going Swimming in the Wild River
My friend was talking to me on WhatsApp about wild swimming whilst I was here. Truthfully I had so many opportunities in Montenegro where I didn’t go swimming. Even in Mostar I only went swimming in Kravice – I said it looked to dirty in Visoko and I think I kind of sounded a bit lame saying this. My friend said I should stick to swimming pools but I wasn’t giving up on this idea.
When I found out about this place In a big way I just wanted to show my friend that I was up for doing this but I am so glad I made this one of my activities Instead of just sitting round the bar all day. I got in at the first river bank after passing the Moto festival and actually it felt great.
I got in again at one other place after this. I was more just submerging myself in than swimming, and there was other people here so didn’t want to leave my bags. It was surprisingly quite warm for after 5PM at night here but again this wasn’t the location my friend at the bar told me about.
My destination was Zbiije Village. On the way here was the Mile Necropolis. I wasn’t expecting to stumble upon this place but its very Interesting because this is the former burial ground of Bosnian Royalty Including the first Bosnian King Tvrtko I.
I got to the location my friend at the pub give me not too long after this. Here was a Bistro place and down some stairs was the river. I sat here on a rock in the water drinking my beers. I could see all the fish and tadpoles swimming round my body and it was just so blissful.
I stayed in for about 20 minutes. It wasn’t the kind of experience I was expecting in Visoko but still it was great to be here.
A Quick Stop At The Music Festival
I was coming back this way so I thought why not come and check it out. I didn’t order a beer here (mostly because no one could understand me lol) but I had some food which I was quite hungry for.
I had a bit of a dance. The music was pretty good but boring old me I guess – I only stayed about 20 minutes. The Moto pub was still open after I got into town – which was good to know – so I finished the night in here just chilling out with a few more beers.
My Last Day In Visoko
This was not the plan really – I wanted to leave Visoko on the 22nd. I never realized how much demand there was for coach tickets. So, I couldn’t get another bus until the 23rd with my 2 options being early in the morning or an overnight bus.
It meant less time in Croatia. I wanted more as I never seem to stay here in Croatia for very long (I have been to Zagreb twice now prior to this) but this was what I did – went on the overnight bus on the 23rd to get into Zagreb Croatia for the 24th.
So, I had the best part of another day left in Visoko. What I really would have liked to have done was to get down into the Ravne 2 tunnels but it just was not happening for me – it was the day I was supposed to check out of the hotel and what I wanted to ask was to leave my bags here until later but it was such a pain getting through to the staff here I eventually had to give up.
I got hold of someone on WhatsApp in the end and they actually said I could leave my bag in my room but by the point I was already at the pub, and this was it for the rest of the night.
I suppose it is just one of those things. At some point I am going to have to come back here.
A Day In Zagreb and a Half Day in Norway
I know this blog is about Bosnia but thought I’d just throw this in at the end. The coach trip to Zagreb I was a bit nervous about. My concern was having a night of no sleep before having to be at the airport early hours of the next day (6AM).
It was actually not so bad. I really needed to pee at the start of the bus trip and the coach toilet was out of order but we had a stop not too long after and once I was able to relieve myself I actually slept very well.
Besides having to be woken up at the Croatian border (quite annoying) I got all the sleep I needed – no doubt.
This Flix Bus seats are very relaxing. The head rests you can just lay back on and sleep. I didn’t think it was right for them to have an out of order toilet for a 12 hour coach trip but it was comfortable to sleep on these so seats so I will let them off.
I got to Zagreb for about 8:30AM (I think it was). Again I had an annoying problem with my hostel here. I suppose fair enough the check in is at 3pm here but I needed somewhere to keep my bags and this really done my head in – only one day here and the place I paid to stay had nobody about to drop off my bags.
Fortunately, I come back about 11:30AM and caught a girl on way out and managed to get inside. I had a shower, put my bag down and finally took my opportunity to visit the zoo.
It was a good few hours . I didn’t see the Chimpanzees here last time so this time for that reason I was quite happy.
I headed back to my hostel after this. In the end I pre-booked my taxi (uber) for 3AM and went to bed about 9pm to try and get as much sleep as I could before.
I was dreading catching my 6AM flight to Norway but it was fine. I actually slept all the way here and actually it was pretty great to get this far on my very long trip.
My Last Day In Sandefjord Norway
I suppose you could say the only reason I took the inconvenient choice to visit Norway for a 10 hour stop over was only just to say that I have been here. I am kind of obsessive lol like my book sets where I have to get every one – I’ve also said I want to go to every country in Europe.
Norway is definitely as expensive as they say but in the same breath – I thought it was very beautiful. Especially the marina – and if I only had more time here.
I would have loved to have took the 2.5 hour ferry to Stromstad Sweden. Also, the nature reserve I really would have loved to have a hunt for some Norwegian trolls here lol
I had a quick look around but as per usual I was over obsessing about how much time I had here before I had to go.
The real annoying part was I got to the airport 4 hours before my flight and then it was delayed by a further 2 hours. I actually was worried because I just walked out the airport without being stamped. It turns that has open borders but I thought I’d come back and get taken by the police.
Of course, I didn’t and I was stuck waiting here with everything costing a small fortune.
15 euros for 2 magnets 12 euros for a sandwich and 18 euros for a pint of beer. I could have spent more time in the City and I really wish I had but still it was an amazing 2 weeks of travel and certainly (when I am rich) I can come back to Norway again lol.
Final Word
So, I really hope you have enjoyed reading this all. I highly recommend visiting all these places I visited on this tour. Both Montenegro and Bosnia – Mostar, Visoko, Podgorica, Tivat – the most beautiful lakes and rivers you will see in all of Europe.
Also, Zagreb Zoo in Croatia is a nice affordable day out for just 5 euros, and as for Sandefjord Norway I would like to go back again to experience it properly – it’s also a very beautiful place but make sure you have at least 200 euros.
I’d love to come back here and get the boat to Sweden one day – perhaps we will see about this – but anyhow.
