I Woke Up Back In Gibraltar and Went Back To Morocco
Yes, this really happened. I Woke Up Back In Gibraltar and Went Back To Morocco. I am amazed really how I actually did this, and continuing on from my last post this is a bit of a strange one.
After getting back home from the Lunatic Asylum that is St Pancras International Train Station (late at night) after my last trip to Gibraltar, and paying £70 for an Uber to get back to my flat (with my very heavy bags) I was completely exhausted!!
I’d drunk so much beer whilst away and I really wasn’t feeling well at all. I was so glad to get back home and when I did I went straight to bed. I thought the best thing for me right then was for me to go to sleep and get some rest.
Although, when I actually got into bed I just couldn’t get to sleep. I was suppose maybe I was lacking vitamins and minerals but for how worn out I was I thought should have been out like a light. It was Incredibly frustrating. I’ve had nights before like this when my drinking has been bad – I was tossing and turning, trying to get comfortable enough to fall asleep but I just couldn’t.
UNTIL I DID
Now, I’m not a very frequent lucid dreamer. For anyone that doesn’t know what this is it is when you have a dream with a clear level of awareness. It is like when your awake but you’re in a dream. This is what I had happen on this night. It was kind of funny as because I was so desperate to sleep I was Instantly aware as soon as I started dreaming.
I actually said to myself as soon as I had this realization “Thank God I am finally asleep”.
It was very bizarre – and more so, was the actual dream because I’m sure in it I was back in Gibraltar. I only remember parts of it but a funny thought I had was I’d only just got back to England and just like that I was back in Gibraltar again.
I will spare the details because this blog post is not about my Lucid Dream. Why I am writing this because I woke up back in Gibraltar for real.
I Woke Up Back In Gibraltar

12 days later… On the Saturday before Easter, after 12 whole days SOBER – I went and booked another flight out to Gibraltar. I had been so unwell after my last visit, and I wasn’t planning to drink but my friend wanted to as it was Good Friday and not just this but I had to meet someone at the pub anyway (a friend of my mothers).
Bit crazy how it all happened, but basically, after me and my friend left the pub we went back to hers. I was in her kitchen going through my photos and videos from my last trip, and I guess that is what put the idea in my head.
She must have left me alone for maybe 15-20 minutes whilst she went upstairs and I just thought FK it! I don’t know what possessed me but I looked on Skyscanner, I found a £75 flight for the upcoming Thursday and I booked it!
For less than a week later. I got back to Gibraltar on the 24th April (2025). I was there the last time from the 1st to the 7th and I was already back here again.
So, I Woke Up Back In Gibraltar FOR REAL!
It was I suppose a niggling feeling in my subconscious mind. Like I had unfinished business here. I didn’t really see the monkeys up on the rock – that was one thing. Twice I walked up there and was left pretty much disappointed because even though I see 2 monkeys that was it, and I never had my any battery to take a photo.
And even worse – I went up again the next day and I didn’t see any this time, and I got lost!! meaning I had to walk for miles to get back to my place.
So, that was one thing.
Another was I never went to the Almeda Wildlife Park. I got there but it was before it opened and I never went back after that. I never done any blogging, hardly any reading – all I really did was get drunk and act like a fool.
The Reason(S) Why I Went Back To Gibraltar
SO, The last time I was here in Gibraltar I spent basically the whole 7 days getting drunk. When I go away I know it’s a bit boring but I like to work on my blogs and websites. I know I should be out enjoying the sun and exploring but this is one thing I like to do whilst travelling – working remotely.
In an ideal situation I would like to earn whatever I can whilst away to help cover what I spend on things like flights and tours etc. (and beer I guess more than I like to admit). I’m not actually quite here yet where my blogs are making decent money but it is something I’d love to make happen.
So, I didn’t do much blogging on my last trip to Gibraltar that was one thing I didn’t like.
Another was that I usually like to come back with a big list of ideas. I never did that either. I mean It wasn’t a wasted trip as I did have a good time, AND the two heavy cases I brought back were full of bits to put on eBay. That was definitely worth it but still, I was coming back thinking – I have to come back here and have a better time.
Do all the things I didn’t last time around. I mean I suppose it felt a bit like Lanzarote when I lost my phone there. I didn’t want to remember it for all the bad things so I went back and it was so much better.
But this time I guess it wasn’t just a matter of going back to Gibraltar as I also went back to Morocco. For the third time in the same year.
Going Back To Morocco…
Well, first of all, I really want to talk more about my 6 days back In Gibraltar but yes I booked my flight to Gibraltar but the flight back I booked was from Morocco.
I did this because my thinking was I could get the ferry over to Tangier.
This was kind of on my mind before – That I would like to either go from Morocco to Spain/Gibraltar or vice versa on the ferry. To get this experience for whenever I choose to go again and just to kind of have my maiden voyage along this route.
On my 2nd trip to Morocco (of 2025), which I took my friend with me on, my initial plan then was to head to Tangier and get the ferry to Spain to go to Gibraltar. This was one reason I went to Gibraltar the last time. Because I had it in my head I would come here after leaving Morocco.
It’s mad really how I done this but it actually worked out cheaper than it would have if I’d left Marrakech to go to Tangier and gone that way.
Plus, really it worked out better as I got to fly back with my friend and help her out with getting through etc. Of course, It meant that I would end up leaving and going back to England twice before I’d actually make this full trip but I’m glad I did it.
I will come back to what happened in Morocco (trip #3 of 2025) soon but let’s talk about Waking Up Back in Gibraltar again!
My 4th Time In Gibraltar
Maybe I should not bring my credit card out with me when I’m drinking. The morning after I booked this flight I was thinking Oh My God!! what have I done. What is wrong with me? – I was thinking can I even really afford this?
It was a bit stupid really because the money I had I should have used to restock my eBay. I had money from a loan I got from eBay but this was not supposed to be for this. In some ways it was nice to just treat myself but it wasn’t the smartest of business decisions.
I got back to Gibraltar at just after 8:30pm on my 1st night back. It was strange really that I was really actually back here. I was again booked to stay in the same bed, in the same room at the Emile Hostel.
My friend I got to reserve the room for me before I arrived and I was hoping to save a bit of money by doing this (and not booking through Hostel World.com). I was expecting to pay just £25 a night but it was about £31 if my memory serves me correct.
Tourist tax I can’t remember how much it is but this was included in the price too. It was fine really but I guess this is the thing about Gibraltar – apart from Cigarettes and Tobacco it isn’t really the cheapest place to go. Some things are but if your on a budget some things can be quite pricey.
I won’t bore you with how much it is to eat out and drink here but anyway so 1st night I just pretty much went and got some food and went back to sleep but next day was quite good.
I Made Sure To Visit The Almeda Wildlife Park
So, It wasn’t that I didn’t drink during this 6 days. In fact, I had a beer on this morning but prior to that there was the small matter of going to the Almeda Wildlife Park, and not too early like I was the last time. I made sure to wait till 9AM so I knew I could actually get in.
It was pretty cool coming here although I was a bit shocked to to see the price had gone up to £12. I think it might have been the 1st time I come to Gibraltar I was paying £5 and I was coming here for a walk around most days. I’d have maybe liked to do this again but £12 was a bit of a deal breaker for me – even though I do understand why they have put prices up.
My highlight of the trip was one of the Parrots here called Jumbo. Before I even entered I heard the keeper say “Say Hello Jumbo” and clear as day I heard him say it from the other side of the fence. I got in and it was pretty busy – probably the busiest I’ve ever seen it but it was nice.
I see the Lemurs, the Marmosets, The Tamarins, The Asian Macaques and of course the Parrots.
I was surprised actually because despite having around 15 African Greys here (perhaps even more) it was Jumbo The Blue Macaw that did all the talking.
African Greys are supposed to be the easiest Parrots to train. I mean I wondered if they would all be able to talk too but Jumbo certainly stole the show for me. I was definitely very amused.
And that was that but after this there was something else I wanted to do in the area. I also had another matter of unfinished business to deal with from my last visit.
If you read my last blog you would have heard all about the mayhem with Crazy Steve over the Trafalgar Pub.
Going To Apologize In The Trafalgar
Really, I was a bit nervous about going to the Trafalgar. I wanted to apologize but I wasn’t really sure how they would take it. Last time I was in here with Crazy Steve we were both escorted out by the Police and It wasn’t just Steve that was really drunk.
I wanted to apologize before I left last time really. In Truth I was partly to blame for being Steve drinks. What happened was kind of on me but fortunately the landlord was very nice about it. He wasn’t working when this happened but he said I am fine, and he had more of a problem with Steve being allowed to drink in his pub in the 1st place.
It was quite a relief for me as I quite like it in this pub. I came her the 1st time I come to Gibraltar and that was the first time I met the landlord. He has remembered me every time I’ve gone back since and I would have been very upset if I had been barred.
I was an idiot myself that night I think, it was not just Crazy Steve causing trouble although what I didn’t realise actually was Steve broke the glass case. It was still broken when I was here again.
I felt pretty bad about it really because I doubt will be cheap to fix. I hope for them it is but anyway Crazy Steve – where was he?
About Crazy Steve
It was funny actually because last time I clocked Steve straight away when I got into Casemates Square the last time. It was the same this time but I did my very best to avoid him. I think I only see him 2 or 3 times actually and I never spoke to him.
I thought I might be tempted to at some point but actually he was not really about for the whole 6-7 days that I was here. My friend In Gibraltar did say to me about not talking to him. He was right I think as he would have just been asking me for money but I think would have liked to see a bit more of him lol Just for a laugh he never disappoints. Now…
So – this was on the Friday. The rest of the day I went down the Pig and Whistle and after this with my friend we went for an Indian. This was very nice but only thing after we finished he went back to his room I went back to mine and it was STILL so early. I was back at the hostel about 8pm and I did not want to go to sleep after a big plate full.
I lied down for a bit but after a little while I had the idea of going to the Kareoke night at the Hendrix pub in Ocean Village. They have a kind of juke box set up where you select your song on a machine and Its a pretty big place.
I had maybe 3 beers whilst there and I went shortly after singing. I then had one more beer down the Skull pub and for that night that was it. Mission completed.
Walking Back Up The Rock of Gibraltar
I was actually thinking I would go here the next morning. My Initial plan was I would just go up really early before the guards started on the gates. I did not do this. To a few people I said I was going to do this but when it come to it I was too hungover.
Although, I still had this on my mind so the next thing I was thinking about was just getting a ticket for the nature reserve. I thought maybe I could do this cheap as along Main Street I see a sign that said £20 for entry to the nature reserve.
I was willing to pay this but after I went to the tourist office they said it was £39.00 and the sign what said £20 was for entrance to St. Michaels Cave and the WW2 Tunnels on top of the price for entry to the nature reserve. More than I was willing to pay but this did not put me off.
What I did in the end was after a few beers down the pub I waited till after 5PM! and just walked up there. I was a bit nervous as the guards was still there but I walked past them and they didn’t say anything so was pretty good timing I think.
It was very hot walking up, really how you’d expect it to be in Spain and Gibraltar. The weather was a bit all over the place during my trip but this day it was nice. Although, it was a good job I brought water because wow I certainly needed it.
Why This Time Was Different
So, I really did not want a repeat of last time (actually the last 3 times) where I walked up the rock and never really see much. I mean you do get some amazing views actually looking down but I didn’t see much of the monkeys the last few times.
Not to mention the hassle I caused myself last time not going down the right way. This was horrible the next day because my calf’s were aching like mad. This time I learned that actually if I walk up even right to the top, as long as I come down the right way where I take the stairs instead of the road it is not too much for me.
It was a great experience, probably my best time up here so far. The sun was out and even though it was very tiring at first with all the walking when I see all the monkeys in the apes den it was all worth it. Plus, what I realised was the last 3 times I come up I never went to the top and you really have to if you want the best experience.
My tip would be to keep walking up till you get to the cable car. I think if you don’t do this you probably wont see much of the monkeys because this is their main spot.
Also, another thing I learned don’t walk around with bags. I mean there are actually signs warning of this but as I had a bag one of the monkeys got a bit nasty with me. He didn’t try to snatch my bag but he did seem quite threatening.
I mean actually I think maybe this Ape might not have liked me taking photos of him and his family but I think it was more he was trying to scare me into dropping my bag.
It was kind of funny in a way but I guess it was a lesson learnt. I didn’t get the chance to come back up the rock after this and it was quite unfortunate.
Bad Weather and Sickness
The next day after this there was a horrible black cloud over Gibraltar. It didn’t rain but it definitely looked like it would only be a matter of time before it did. So I spent most of the next day at the pubs and one person I met was one of the monkey keepers from up the rock.
My friend actually arranged with him a trip for the next day to go up with him in his van. It was a real shame though because the next day I was the most ill I had been from drinking beer in years. I suspected it was the last beer I had of the night down Bruno’s on Ocean Village – if you go there stick to the bottles!
I am not often ever sick to the point where I vomit but this next morning I was violently sick. Running for the bathroom every half hour. It was fortunate I didn’t puke in my dorm, but it made me so weak I couldn’t even get up to charge my phone and disappointingly I missed my private Rock tour.
Apparently the monkey keeper wasn’t happy about this but it was just one of those annoying things. I would have loved to have gone back up there but I was just too ill.
It was quite uneventful after this (my stay in Gibraltar). Although, I did book an extra night. I did kind of feel I could have done with the extra day in Morocco but the day I planned to leave was Bank Holiday and it wasn’t really ideal to leave on that day.
A Frustratingly Long Day Leaving Spain
The morning I left Gibraltar I was in a rush to leave. I had no idea how long it would take me to get to Algeciras from La Linea and I definitely was panicking about not getting my ferry in time.
PLUS, on top of that AGAIN I let my friend talk me into buying more stuff to bring back to sell on eBay. Just one case this time but STILL it was a headache to push about.
And not just this – on this morning – those black clouds I said about, they finally opened up, and to add to my woes of getting to the ferry in time It was hammering it down with rain. It was like a weeks worth of rain all at once. Just my luck.
I was fortunate that my friend gave me an umbrella. This was good of him but at the same time this certainly made things more difficult. Mostly because I had my bag for life to carry over my shoulder, the travel case to wheel along, I had to use my phone for Google maps and I am not sure how I managed to hold an umbrella at all.
It was pretty windy as well. I joked after that if I didn’t have my heavy case then I would have been off in the sky like Mary Poppins.
So that was a bit of a laugh but actually when I got to La Linea I could have cried. I could not believe what I was seeing I got to La Linea Bus Station and it was basically half demolished. Somebody said in Gibraltar something about the bus station and having to go somewhere else but it kind of went over my head.
I was walking round after this trying to figure out where to go and nobody could understand me when I asked them for help. The worst part was when somebody said to me “Speak English Sir, I don’t understand you”.
I gave up asking people after that. It really seemed pointless but fortunately I did work out that the bus station was still in use and I could get my bus to Algeciras from just around the corner.
Although, I had another problem after this because the bus was cash only. More panicking as I had no euros but thankfully somebody there no doubt see how frustrated I was and very kindly paid for me. What a relief! I was finally out the rain, my case was put away and I had about 45 minutes to try and chill out a bit.
Getting To Algeciras
I got to Algeciras port pretty quickly after this. It was about half past 12 when I got here and my ferry was scheduled for 4pm. I more than made it here in time which I thought was good but still I had a whole 3 1/2 hours to wait so maybe I should have took longer.
It was quite frustrating being here as well. As I couldn’t order any food or drink at the café because I couldn’t speak Spanish and I also had problems at the boarding desk. I queued up a few times because I though it was time to board and I was sent away by a woman who couldn’t understand a word of English each time.
I am sure I almost missed my boat because of this. It was very hard to deal with but lucky for me there was a woman in the queue who spoke both English and Spanish. I think, If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have known that I needed to change the time on my ticket to get through to boarding.
I had to literally run after this to get my ticket changed. It felt like I only just made it on to the ferry but actually I’m not sure – maybe not because once I was on the ferry that was another annoying thing. I must have been waiting for over 3 hours for it to leave.
It felt like forever and I was getting hungry and thirsty. There was a canteen on the boat. It seemed like the delay was just to get that ready but the food was OK once I finally got to eat it.
The boat trip was no trouble after this either – until I actually got off it.
That was another thing. I was told I needed to fill out a form and give it to someone on the boat but I never realised who this was and I just got off without doing this. I was then told I couldn’t enter Morocco because my passport hadn’t been stamped – so I had to go back on the ferry again and find someone to stamp it (the Police I think it was).
This took well over an hour of waiting and it took so long that new passengers were boarding the boat to go back to Spain. That would have just been my luck – I got a bit lost after getting my passport stamped as well so I think almost this nearly happened. I almost got stuck on the ferry going back to Spain.
I thankfully did not, but, still, there was a few more things that happened after this.
Where Is Best Algeciras or Tarifa Going To Tangier?
Several people in Gibraltar said to me – when I got to Algeciras to get the free bus to Tarifa and get the ferry from there. I should have listened. If you are going to Tangier then Tarifa is by far the better ferry route.
I got off the ferry from Algeciras. My first problem was after I got the bus to the terminal . The customs officers pulled everything out my suitcase. It was so dodgy – I had a Hi-Fi system, a VHS player and 20 pouches of Tobacco. There was about 5 of them and it was pretty scary before they let me go.
Then I needed to get a taxi. The regular taxis wanted I think 500 dirhams I think but I used the Indrive App. I found a driver to take me for 150 dirhams with some other passengers but then he couldn’t take me because my cases were too big.
He got one of the drivers there to take me which was much appreciated but he wanted 300 Dirhams and I didn’t realise but I was miles away from my hostel.
It was a long drive, maybe 45 minutes away and the worst part when I got to near my place the driver got his brother to meet me. This was actually very helpful. It cost me another 50 dirhams and half my cigarettes but when he pointed over to the ferry port and said that is where they come in from when you go to Tarifa I felt pretty silly
*Tarifa port goes to Tangier Ville and Algeciras port goes to Tangier New port.
This was a massive headache. I’d been told in Gibraltar more than once to go to Tarifa but for the sake of saving £12 on my ferry ticket I went from Algeciras.
I
It was pretty funny when he pointed over to Tangier Ville port and said how much time and hassle I would have saved going from Tarifa but lesson learnt.
Getting To My Hostel In Tangier
The hostel I booked to stay at I would definitely recommend Bayt Alice on Rue Khetib. The bed I stayed in was very comfortable. Usually in a lot of hostels the pillows are hard to sleep on but this place was really nice.
Kind of like a Traditional Moroccan Museum / Art Gallery. Very good value for £10 a night. There was some trouble here outside. The first night someone was drunk causing trouble and the next day someone was going completely nuts outside – right in front of my window but still I was a bit sad to go when they said I couldn’t stay another night.
My next place the banana hostel just 7 minutes away. It was a bit cheaper but it was not as nice. No free mint tea and my locker had a broken door. It was alright for the night but I think if I come back I would go somewhere else or back to Bayt Alice.
My 3 days here I think wasn’t too bad. The scenery is pretty amazing – you are right by the sea and that is quite special itself. I do think though there is a lot more trouble than in Marrakech. It seems there is more of a drinking and drug culture here. A bit like Agadir but I think it was worse because I didn’t hear any crazy people there.
It’s quite a pain walking around the medina in Tangier as well. Twice I ended up paying the same boy to help me find my hostel. That cost me 100 dirhams the last time as I wasn’t thinking. You can have quite stay in Morocco but it is really only if you can avoid situations like this and with taxi drivers.
I used my driver from the Indrive App on the morning I left. He only charged me 100 dirhams to take me to the train station. I felt a bit silly paying that to the boy because this could have paid my taxi fayre or even better I could have given a tip.
Leaving Tangier and Casablanca
My driver was running a bit late to take me to the train station. He was very helpful actually but I did not make the 12pm train to Casablanca as I had hoped. I probably could have done with getting there earlier but no I got a ticket for 2pm and this was no problem.
I rode in 1st class for the first hour almost before I was told my seat was in the next carriage in 2nd class. There was no Wi-Fi on the train which was a bit rubbish but I had my book to read and I had my mobile data topped up in Tangier the day before so I was OK. I was getting Internet on and off basically.
I got to Casablanca about 2-3 hours later. The most crazy thing was I was looking out the window along the way – I was curious to see what wildlife I could see. I didn’t see much for most of the journey but the most crazy thing was when the train was getting into Casablanca I see an Elephant!
I did not get a photo unfortunately.
My theory is that I went past one the 2 zoos here and it was one of them I see out the window. Unless it was someone’s pet. I can’t imagine someone would be too thrilled about having to cover the costs of this but I guess maybe they was rich.
Back To Marrakech
My 3rd time back in just 5 months! I went in January, again in March and now I was back again. It was my first time where I straight away found my hostel. The last time I had my friend with me and I could see she was struggling with me trying to find my way around with google maps.
The time before this was even worse it must have took me 2 hours to get through the medina but this time it was very different.
I found a driver on the InDrive app. I had to meet him down the road because InDrive drivers do not want to be near actual taxi drivers (or the police). I’m not sure exactly why this is but I think other drivers can get violent as they are undercutting them. And maybe some drivers don’t have licenses (I don’t know).
I think the taxi drivers have too much of a bad reputation with over charging people. In Agadir I had trouble with them and this was before I used the InDrive App. It is so much better as you agree on fayre before they even meet you and it is usually quite cheap.
Coming Back To The Sun Hostel
I realise that this place probably wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste. It’s really for your typical backpacker sort that wants there money to go as far as possible. It’s just over £10 a night to stay at the Sun Hostel but I would say it does have a lot of good things about it.
You get breakfast each morning at 8AM till 11AM. There is a kitchen to cook. You have hot water the beds have curtains which is good for privacy. The dorms are mixed – I think this for some would be a problem but I am not really fussy.
I think the best part is all the tours the hostel can get you on and the receptionist Salah is very helpful. This was my 3rd time meeting him and it was quite funny being back and seeing him again so soon after the last time. I think maybe he thinks I will just keep coming back now but I don’t know – there are other places I’d like to go so not sure when my next time will be.
It was a good stay again for the time I was back here and I even got to do a few new things.
Visiting La Perle Aux Ouisseux
La Perle Aux Ouisseux is a wildlife reserve near Marrakech. It translates in English from French to “the pearl for the birds”. During my trip to Marrakech back in January (2025) I decided to come here on the day before going back home to England.
I never actually made it. What I realised then was there was no way to get here with public transport. Only by taxi and it is quite a way to go – 30 minutes driving or 3 hours walking, and I decided to walk!
This was an insane idea – 3 hours walking there and 3 hours walking back. It was proper mad I walked for about 2 hours, probably a bit less following the directions on Google Maps and then I turned around and come back.
I was disappointed not to make it here but it was the right choice at the time.
This time around I definitely thought about walking here again and going all the way but I thought the more sensible Idea would be to book with InDrive and that was what I did. A price was agreed of 130 Dirhams to get me there and finally it was mission complete.
I did walk back actually which took maybe 3 hours but it was nice apart from the heat and getting a bit sun burnt.
What Is La Perle Aux Ouisseux Like?
Well, It wasn’t quite what I expected really. I thought it would be like one of the big zoos in Europe, but La Perle Aux Ouisseux is not a zoo like Google says it is. When you get here you are told that it is actually a Wildlife refuge centre.
It’s name La Perle Aux Ouisseux “the pearl for the birds” was given because it was originally opened to look after birds. It still does have birds here such as Parrots, Peacocks, Vultures, Kookaburras, Ostriches, Emus and others, but it now also looks after animals too.
The main animals it has here are Barbary Macaques, Servals, Porcupines, Maras, Llamas, Pigs, Guinea Pigs, Goats and Fennec Foxes. I don’t think there is many I missed but basically what the guide explained to me is that here is essentially a rescue centre.
Its typical aim is reintroduction to the wild for the birds and animals here. In other cases it is a breeding centre with the aim of releasing younger animals and birds born here into wild populations, but also they look after birds/animals that can’t be reintroduced to the wild that would otherwise be put down.
The man here said to me that he played a big part in the construction of this centre. It looked to me like a very good job had been done. I would love to come back here and see what else gets done here in future. Definitely potential to grow.
It is not a big place really but all the animals and birds here I really felt are very well looked after, and I thought it was very well run.
Walking Back To Jemaa El Fna
I actually was stopped by a taxi when I got off the trail leading away from La Perle Ouisseux but I said to them “No I fancy the Walk” and wow what a walk and a half this was – I think it took me 2 1/2 hours probably longer, and it was a quite hot day.
It was like walking through a desert at some points but there was some quite beautiful flowers kind of in some places. At one point I walked past an Orchard of Oranges and another place which I think was growing Olives.
One place had the funniest security system ever. I am kidding you NOT at the top of the walls of this place going all the way around was broken glass from bottles and I think twisted apart cans. I guess really it is quite clever but I suppose you could just brush it off. Very creative though I didn’t fancy climbing over it lol.
I found a couple of shops along the way and I walked through a couple towns that were quite Interesting. The walk was quite tiring in the end – I definitely caught the sun but I like a nice long walk and this was great really. Very peaceful and quite relaxing in a way.
A Day of Rest and Going To Essouira
After the previous day walking back from The Pearl of Birds I decided the day after I wouldn’t book myself on any tours or really plan anything. Mostly, I just wandered about. I got my hair cut at the barbers and had a few very expensive beers at the sky bar but that was it pretty much it. My 2nd day In Marrakech I didn’t do much really at all.
In a way I do feel like I should have. I could have rode a hot air balloon for £103 or gone to the botanical garden, or the desert but really I just decided that I would have this day off and the next day I would go to Essouira on one tour and to Ouzoud the day after.
So, Essouira is a city I know a girl from. She was saying to me when I was In Morocco before that I should visit here. I certainly thought about going before. I was told about the goats up the trees which I didn’t see but It was really beautiful here.
I had 4 hours to explore from being dropped off by my mini bus. First of all I walked through the fish market. This was pretty mad. I have never seen anything like it and the amount of Sea Gulls here I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many in one place.
After this I stopped at a cafe for Spaghetti Bolognaise on the main square. There was a band playing live music and a strange woman (I think) with a Minnie Mouse head in a Grinch onesie. I’m not sure what to say about that but the atmosphere was pretty good.
It is quite a special place to visit. In a way it reminded me a bit of Cromer pier back in England but with Live music on the square. I am glad I come here but I wasn’t really here very long at all really. After a walk around the streets and shops my last stop off was the Taros sky bar and after drinking 3 beers It was time to go.
Going Back to Ouzoud To See The Monkeys Again
A lot about this trip involved going to see the monkeys. There was the monkeys up the rock, the Almeda Wildlife park and the La Perle Ouisseux. And I think I would have gone to Fez too if I realised about the cedar wood forest tour where the monkeys come down from out of the trees. If only I knew about that tour lol
That will definitely be something for when I come back – whenever this might be but anyway yes so, Ouzoud and going back for the 3rd time in 5 months!
It was not the same this time as before. I was expecting to see the same tour guide from my last two visits but Instead another man did this one.
He wasn’t as good as the last guide. Towards the end it was quite bad as he was terrible at keeping the group together but one good thing was he went a different way. On my last 2 tours they skipped past this whole path that you can see the waterfall from and here you can see monkeys pretty much as soon as you get here.
It was quite special as there was little monkeys playing jumping around a small river and another that had just swiped a bag of sweets. Very entertaining to watch and I would have been quite happy to stay a bit longer.
I think if I come back I will see if I can ditch the guide and go on my own. Maybe it was good I had the tour guide this time but I don’t think I will need one again.
So, besides the new route it was pretty much the same as before we stopped at the waterfall, the rainbow, went on the boat trip and then there was the actual monkeys den.
I said the guide wasn’t as good as the last one because I got lost from the group. We all stopped for dinner. I had a lamb tagine with lots of extras for only 150 dirhams – salad, olives with dip, bread, oranges, mint tea and a big bottle of water. The view was great looking over the waterfall here but I went for toilet and everyone was gone.
I caught up with my guide after and he was just leaving the monkey den with the group. He said take 5 minutes but I must have took longer because the monkeys were just sitting with me for a good few minutes. Strangely they wasn’t just snatching my monkey nuts and running off – I got loads of photos with them.
It was amazing but after this again my guide was nowhere to be seen. I thought I was in trouble till I see the mini bus. Here was a couple girls probably who same thing happened too and the driver I think was a bit annoyed with waiting.
He called the guide and he come back with the rest of the group. I thought he might have been looking for me. I mean I was a bit annoyed he never waited for me in the first place and especially because he told me to pay him 50 dirhams when he found me but to be fair I never paid the 20 dirhams for the boat so it was fine really.
And that was my last day. I got the hostel to get me a taxi for 6:30AM for my 10 AM flight and just like that my dream was all over.
Dreams and Nightmares – The Next Day
If you read my last Gibraltar blog you will know I had an absolute nightmare getting back from Gatwick airport. This was because all of the reselling stock I bought from my friend there. I sold a jacket for £100 of the lot and still all the rest left so it was a worthwhile Investment I think BUT I should not have let him sell me more.
I only paid £45 for what he sold me this time and I was OK with the stuff I got from him but I should have said NO because of all the hassle this caused me. I had to get this case to La Linea first, then to Algeciras, and after that I had to get it off the boat, back on the boat and off the boat again.
Then there was a full search at Tangier docks, having to get this to 2 hostels in Tangier Ville medina and to Casablanca and Marrakech and back to England. It was nice to check it in at the airport just because I thought almost I can get this back home and not worry about it anymore.
It was a huge relief actually just putting this in my sisters shed. I thought great now I can go out but could you believe this? I opened the case and to my horror it was not my case. It I’m sure was the same as my one but when I opened it one half was full of food and the other half filled with stuff like shoes, medication, jewellery.
It was a kick in the teeth. I didn’t know what to do with it but actually my luck is very funny sometimes.
Returning The Case and Getting My One Back
It was really depressing thinking about this. Waking up in the morning I was in a rut. The holiday blues was probably something to do with it as well but thinking about this missing case was really bugging me.
I spent the day till about 2pm in bed waking up and going back to sleep. It was a nice sunny day but I was feeling depressed. I had made a claim already with Lostproperty.org and phoned the number – they both said talk to the airline. It was so frustrating. Both departments were not really any help at all.
So, I posted on the R/Travel thread on Reddit – about what I should do and I suppose they told me what I was already thinking – I needed to go back to Gatwick with the case and see if they had my case there.
It was crazy how this happened but whilst I was in the queue at the Wizz Air desk there was a couple there also looking for their lost case. I kind of looked at them and they looked at me. I see the woman point over and I asked her “did you fly back from Marrakech yesterday?”.
It was unbelievable but this was their case and they had mine in the back of their car. The woman was so happy that she threw her arms around me and hugged me. I couldn’t believe when I see my name on the tag on the case in their car – how daft I didn’t check this – it would have saved me £40 but I got my case back that was the main thing.
It was missing a wheel though. I think these cases were pretty crappy but I broke theirs actually – these cases were both the same product I’m pretty sure and definitely not good quality for carrying over 20KG in weight.
I will finish this blog post here but just for a quick spoiler – I will be off to possibly Scotland and Malta very soon so will blog about one or both. If you would like to support my work at TeddyBearsTravels.com you can buy me a coffee here<<
Many thanks from Alex, Teddy and the Monkeys!
