Wroclaw And Prague In 5 Days - A Lot Of Hassle But Was It All Worth it?

Wroclaw And Prague In 5 Days – A Lot Of Hassle But Was It All Worth it?

Wroclaw and Prague in 5 Days – A Lot of Extra Hassle but Was It Worth It?

Me and my bright Ideas. Bulgaria was great. Especially Plovdiv (which I think is now one of my favourite cities I’ve ever been to) but that said – If I had just come back on my original flight it would have saved me so much money and hassle.

Prague just seems to be getting so expensive these days but I suppose I never really thought about this because how could I resist coming back to see the marshmallow men again?

So, this was my sixth time here in Prague (technically) if I count my stopover at the airport back in 2017 on my way to Crete (my 1st ever time leaving the UK & Ireland), but fast forward to now…

As soon I see the email about my flight back from Wroclaw being delayed by 24 hours I Instantly thought “hmm, so I can get to Prague on the coach from here – I wonder how much a flight back is?”.

A proper devil on my shoulder moment. I think as soon as I see I could get back home for £26 and get a coach for under £20 I had already made my mind up.

Plus, It was only a year ago that I travelled from Prague to Warsaw via Wroclaw on my way to Malta back in June 2025.

On that trip I got the coach from Prague to Warsaw and I noticed Wroclaw was the last stop on the way. Warsaw is a lot further away but Its only about 4 hours between Wroclaw and Prague so for me it had to be done.

About My Stay In Wroclaw Poland

I came here to Wroclaw because my stop over flight back from Sophia Bulgaria meant I had to transit through here to get back home. It was only supposed to be 2-3 hours I was here but after the delay it was 25 hours instead. I never booked this flight back with the Intention of going anywhere else but after I see the email saying about the extra time I had to spend here I honestly thought – do I even want to be in Wroclaw for this long?

Bad really, I never even considered that I might actually like it here. I just thought “I don’t want to be stuck here.” I thought about going to Prague Instantly and what I was going to do was just head straight to the coach station and leave on the 1AM coach to get to Prague for 5:30AM

However, It was whilst I was on the train from Plovdiv to Sophia when I thought “I am actually tired and I really don’t want to be up all night on a coach”. Exactly, why I booked a hostel – it was only about 7 euros as well so it was definitely a good move.

A Short but Sweet Stay In Wroclaw

So, the main thing that amazed me about Wroclaw was the buildings. Mainly the churches here, the University Library (which I shared a photo of above) but generally I found this City so Interesting and I think I’d definitely like to come back to stay for a bit longer.

I found it was quite cheap here too. Definitely, compared to Prague it was a lot more affordable. At one place I had a plate of pork belly, rice and polish dumplings for only 5 euros. My Uber to the coach station was cheap enogh and also the shops.

Although, one thing I think people might not like is all the drinking here. A lot of people I noticed were getting drunk near where I was staying. There a broken 2L bacardi bottle right outside the door of my hostel and some people there just looked totally wrecked.

There was also basically a rave at a club at the back that went on to 5AM. I slept through it mostly but as I was woken up by someone in my dorm for my sleep talking (I think it must of been) – I could hear it clearly,

Going For An Early Morning Walk

I was pretty much wide awake by this point and after maybe 10-15 minutes I decided to have a walk – to find out where the music was coming from and get some photos.

Gnomes on the street in Wroclaw Poland

I see at least 3 of these cool little gnomes (wroclaw dwarfs) on my walk. Apparently there are 100s of them all scattered about around the City.

My thinking was to find the rave (just out of curiosity) but also I never had any battery when I got into Wroclaw the night before to take any photos.

It’s much like in Bulgaria here with the churches. These I found very interesting but of course there are all sorts of other buildings too. The masonry here is something to keep an eye out for here on the tops of buildings. I can imagine many people must walk past and not even notice.

For me, as a kind of Occultist I am always finding myself wondering about the significance of certain things – such as dragons, the green man and other religious symbolism.

I am sure this is a one big reason I love Prague so much but here too has a lot of Interesting symbology to look at too. If you are interested in the Tartaria stuff I think you will really like it here.

So, moving on…

I actually wouldn’t have minded staying another night in Wroclaw but in the same breath – I couldn’t wait to get back to Prague again.

My 6th Time Visiting Prague

Prague astronomical clock June 2026

After 4 hours on the coach – I was finally back in Prague and when I think about it – since the thought popped in my head about coming back here for my 6th time, I was excited – I could not wait to get back here even though I had my 5 days away in Bulgaria to look forward to as well before this.

I had actually been looking forward to this for much of my trip away. When I got here it was about 18:30pm and getting to my hostel was very little trouble.

I rode one bus for 2 stops and then I rode the tram for 4 stops – I had to walk for about 5-10 minutes to get here but that was it.

Arriving At The Hostel Fontana In Prague

I didn’t really like it here based on my first impressions. I had planned to book for 3 nights but after seeing my room and the facilities I Instead only booked the one night. I booked another hostel to stay and I was going to move on the next day but I really couldn’t be bothered with the extra stress.

Its funny but because I had a half decent pillow on my bed and because I had an alright night of sleep I booked the other 2 nights and lost my downpayment of £4 on my other hostel. I mean I suppose it was OK in the end – the best thing was it was close to Prague Old Town, and the Charles Bridge.

A Forecast For Bad Weather

Rain clouds over Prague city june 2026

One thing that did put a dampener on my trip to Prague (quite literally) was the rain. I was hoping the weatherman would be wrong. As soon as I got here there was heavy rain. I had looked actually on the coach here and this was forecast for my whole stay here.

Prague is known historically for its flooding too – so that was a worry. 2002, 2008 and 2010 saw devastating floods here. Even in 2024 there was another one. This was in the back of my mind – “what if it floods again” but fortunately the rain was not constant just kind of on and off.

It Finally Stopped The Next Morning

On my 2nd day there was heavy rain again in the morning. I stayed in the hostel till around 11AM and only left when I see the sun was back out. I thought I would chance it because if I didn’t I wouldn’t have done nothing.

My plan was of course to go back to Prague Zoo. I had told my little baby Niece I was going to see the monkeys and I didn’t want to disappoint her.

Burgas, Plovdiv, Wroclaw and Sophia all had zoos I didn’t go to. I must have missed loads of monkeys (Oh oh Ah Ahs as my niece calls them) but at least I did go to Prague Zoo [My 4th time]

A Lovely Day Out At Prague Zoo

When I got to the zoo it was still dry. It looked like it would maybe start raining again but I must have had a good hour there before it did. I noticed when I was up the top of the 1st hill the dark clouds were starting to gather.

I knew It was only a matter of time, and maybe 20 minutes later the heavy rain started again. I said to my sister on the phone that I thought it would be pointless staying if I was only going to be seeking shelter here but I kept going and was not disappointed.

On my 1st walk around I didn’t see no Tasmanian Devils, Polar Bears or Orangutans. The Tasmanian Devils I checked on 2-3 times to see. I got to see the other Jungle monkeys in the Borneo enclosure, one of the 2 Gorilla enclosures but I thought I’d have to go without seeing none of the things I wanted too.

I felt a bit mad getting in the cable car even though it still hadn’t stopped raining. From here I see the Highland Gorillas and then the rain stopped and I started making my way around again.

The Polar Bear I spotted first over a fence – I wasn’t even looking for it, the Orangutans were back out in the Borneo enclosure and then I was very happy to catch one of the ever elusive Tasmanian Devils during their feeding time.

Just To Summarize

I had a great time in the end and actually after last time when I was here last year (getting drunk) it definitely made up for what I felt was a wasted trip that I didn’t fully enjoy.

This time was so much better. All the Zoos in Europe sell alcohol lol Too many I have been to where one beer has turned to several. Always ruins it for me.

This time was great even though the rain did get bad it did eventually stop and actually the day as a whole was a good experience. I actually done quite a lot, and it didn’t stop after going to the Zoo.

Going Up The Old Town Bridge Tower / Crossing The Charles Bridge an Beyond!

View from clock tower bridge prague.czech republic june 2026

After the Zoo I decided not to head straight back to the hostel. As much as I was concerned about the weather and my finances for the rest of my trip I really didn’t want to waste my time here doing nothing.

So, I used my credit card to pay to go up the Old Town Bridge Tower – this is accessible by the the arches underneath the entrance to the Charles Bridge, it’s 250 CZK to go up (10 Euros) but its pretty cool to look over everything.

Not too mention the legend associated with the tower and the statue at the top – of the man with a monkey on his back.

Should You Get a Prague Visitor Pass?

Something else I noticed whilst up in the tower was that I could have come up here for free with a Prague Visitor Pass. This I didn’t really know too much about before but everything I did I during my 3 days here;

  • The Zoo,
  • The Prague To Venis Boat Trip,
  • The Bridge Tower
  • and the Underground City tour…

All I could have done for free with this pass.

Not including all the money including transport around the City – bus, tram and metro. Even the airport express!

The Prague City pass cost’s 110 Euros for 48 hours. I mean I suppose its really a case of whether you will do enough with it in 2 days to justify its price but I think just the incentive to use it makes it worth getting.

I would have certainly seen a lot more with it if I had one.

Next time I’ll have to get one and I will maybe just make a less and trip to tick off as much as possible.

(You can read more about the Prague Visitor Pass here) it basically gives you a free pass to do everything in the City.

Taking A Walk To See the Nutria

The Nutria often mistaken for beavers by tourists on the Prague-Venis river banks.

Funny actually, I remember how amazed I was when I first see these and thought they was wild beavers. The last time here even I found out about the other animals here but I still thought the ones on the banks of lesser town that all the tourists fed were beavers.

So, this time I realised that these were not Beavers. They are South American Water Rats called Nutria. Tourists are advised not to feed them because they have a nasty bite and carry diseases, but still, people here can’t get enough of them.

Everyone was here taking selfies, feeding and petting them. One of them I even see swam out the water and just started climbing on a guy eating his lunch on the river bank.

That was pretty funny but it can’t have been too pleasant for the man they climbed on. I mean it just goes to show that these are basically not afraid of people. They almost seem tame and it’s very likely you will see they will not only let people feed them but pet them as well.

Going Up To Prague Castle

Front view of prague castle czech republic june 2026

I think at least the last couple of times I’ve come to Prague I’ve wanted to head up to Prague Castle. In my mind I think before I thought that “this would take me hours to get up here” and before I just made excuses not to walk up here to see it.

Last time I spent hours in the Irish Times pub thinking about it but never even bothered to get close. I actually blame myself for drinking why I didn’t do this before, but this time – even though I’d been to the Zoo (up the Troja Hills, basically a mountain itself), up the bridge tower (up all those steps as well) – STILL I thought I’d at least see where you walk up from to get here.

Much like I did with the Alyosha Monument in Bulgaria – I went on a scouting mission first, found the pathway up and come back to go up there.

Although, I didn’t leave and come back It was about 6PM and even though I thought it might be a bit too late – I just kept going till I was up to the top of here.

It was easier than I thought – I think for some people yes it would be too far up hill to go but it’s not too bad maybe a 25 minute walk to get to the castle.

Gargoyles on the masonry of prague castle czech republic june 2026

I didn’t go Inside. If I had got the Prague visitor pass and came in early I could have. Definitely a lot of it I didn’t see but anyhow, Its still pretty amazing.

I was fascinated by many things about it. The masonry is very detailed and symbolic, the size of the building is mind blowing too and it looks like a power plant as well with its spires and weathered copper roof.

I’m not a church person but this was really was something else. Possibly, like travelling back in time with the choir inging eyc. you could imagine is something that is still the same now as 100’s of years ago in the past.

Day 3 – Prague Medieval Underground Tour

Prague underground tour skeletons around table

I was down to my last 40 euros on this last day. I had to ask for a loan from my family which I was thankfully given. There was the Bulgaria trip and then Poland/Prague after and really I was quite apprehensive about doing much that meant I would have to spend money.

This again I booked on my credit card and I did enjoy it. I went on the Prague Ghost Tour on my 3rd visit here. That was very Interesting but I remember back then I see this tour and I wanted to do it. This day I didn’t leave me hostel till about 13:30pm – I wasn’t sure what I’d do until 18:30pm when the tour started so basically just went for a wander around the Starometska area.

I went to the Bageterie Boulevard to eat, I went to McDonalds for tea and cake and went for a non alcoholic beer somewhere else. It was a bit of a nightmare because my mobile data stopped working (Tescos / O2 not good for travelling) – So, I was worried I wouldn’t find the tour office but somewhere I found the Wifi and luckily I wasn’t too far away.

My Experience of The Prague Underground Tour

The Golem of Prague model underground tour june 2026

I always had the idea that the Prague City Underground tour might be walking under some old tunnel network. Walking deep under the City with a guide that had a torch but not quite.

You can imagine there are places like this under Prague but anyway, the places we went on this tour were basically just old underground rooms. Some connected but not really. What the guide said was these places were the original street level from the 13th Century.

It sounds exactly something that could corroberate Tartarian mud flood idea but no apparently not. These streets were raised as protection from actual flooding not because they was filled in from the mud of an ancient cataclysm.

Tartarian theorists will argue that it must have been the mud flood because it doesn’t explain raising the streets of other Cities around Europe during the same time frame but I think normal flooding especially in Prague seems more plausable;

Learning The Story of The Prague City Rock Golem

It seemed like this was just as everyone had seen everything already – the tour guide pushed open a normal looking book cabinet full of old books and here was the rock golem.

The room where the book shelf was this was Interesting too – learning about the gristly executions of people for silly things such as religion. By the most gruesume methods. Prague is unbelievably dark but I enjoyed the history lesson.

Especially, about the Golem.

I never heard this story before but it’s a good one. The Golem of Prague was a being created through Kabbalistic magic to help protect the Jewish Community of the City. It lost control after the Rabbi forgot to remove the shem (the name of god) from its forehead before the Sabbath.

It was eventually stopped and according to legend its remains still rest in the City. In the attic of the Old New Synagogue

It’s a fascinaring story – they have an alchemy lab down here too that looks very real like it was actually this that was used to create the Golem.

My Final Half Day In Prague – Boat Trip and A Very Anxious Airport Run…

The last morning for me was actually a bit of a nightmare. The good thing was that I didn’t actually have to fly back till 17:20pm. Only trouble was on the morning I went my phone wasn’t charging.

I wanted to make a good morning of it but not having Google maps to navigate around was one thing. The other was I need my phone for my plane ticket.

Luckily after some time I asked them to charge my phone behind the desk at the hostel. It was charging but so damn slow – only 25% it got to before I just had to ask for it back and get on my way. I had to be so careful with it so battery didn’t go.

I went to one restaurant for food was hoping they could help me get some more charge there but they would not help although food was quite nice. I had sliced pork with Spinach and these Czech Potato Cakes – almost 20 euros with a non alcoholic beer.

Traditional Czech cuisine in Prague

After this, I really had to get a move on. Mostly I come here to buy some Gingerbread men for my little niece, and even though I was right against the clock I couldn’t say no to a boat trip with the Marshmallow men.

This typically takes an hour and I almost got off after paying because I was so worried about missing my flight. I almost felt like crying but I got back on and accepted my mission to get to the airport for my flight by the skin of my teeth.

I booked an Uber and I got here with maybe 20 minutes to spare. It wasn’t good really because I rushed to buy my tobacco from duty free without even checking the price.

I love Prague but one thing that really screwed me on this trip was the price of Tobacco. £168 for 10 pouches – Amber Leaf and Golden Virgina. It was such a rip off. GV apparently in Prague City is a lot cheaper but the airport is not actually duty free or something like this.

Anyway…

The Trip Back Home

The flight was fine. No air pressure getting off the plane it was all good really except I was having trouble with my phone again. I ended up stopping in a pub and having 2 beers (alcoholic lol) and thankfully the bar man called me a taxi to get home.

It was nice actually drinking a proper beer but I will say not drinking for 8 of 9 days for this whole trip and most of my stay in Bulgaria – I definitely had a much better time for it.

I shall finish this blog here – hoped you enjoyed reading and if so please drop us a comment below to share your thought. Will be great to hear from you..

  1. I love architecture and history. I especially love old European cathedrals.
The one thing that turns me off, as included in this article, is public drunkenness. I feel that there is a time and place for drinking, but doing it in public is not one of them. For people to do it in mass is one thing that would make me think twice about visiting. I am glad you pointed that fact out, otherwise I could have taken a trip with the grandkids there and exposed them to more than I bargained for.

    Much appreciated.

    1. Hi Michael, Wroclaw has some amazing churches and architecture. I actually would have happily stayed longer but trouble with me is I typically look to stay in cheap hostels and where I was seemed to be in a bit of a dodgy place. It seems the Polish have the same love of vodka as the russians. I sensed a lot of heavy drinking going on from around where I was but I mean say if you was here with your grandchildren during the day I didn’t think it was so bad.
